Who could have attacked France's high-speed rail?

For Gérald Darmanin, France's Interior Minister tasked with ensuring the security of the Paris Olympics, the recent sabotage of the high-speed rail network must have been a significant setback. Darmanin has pledged that the perpetrators will be swiftly apprehended, but has yet to specify any suspects.

Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra assured that the attackers would not disrupt the festivities, yet the sabotage occurred just hours before the opening ceremony, leading to chaos for travelers and highlighting the vulnerability of a key symbol of French technological achievement.

Caretaker Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has urged caution in making conclusions, though he noted that the attackers clearly understood how to inflict maximum damage. Initial suspicions have pointed to ultra-left radicals, according to security sources briefing the French media, but no group has claimed responsibility. The methods used to ignite fires in crucial optical fibers and other cables along the rail network early on Friday bear similarities to previous extreme leftist attacks

.When cable ducts beside railway lines near Hamburg, Germany, were set on fire last September, an anonymous claim on a left-wing website denounced "capitalist infrastructure." This alone is not conclusive, as the widespread nature of the French attacks indicates a level of coordination across four regions typically not linked to the extreme left. However, it is evident that whoever targeted the rail lines extending from Paris early on 26 July had the Games in their sights.
