Torri Huske secured Olympic gold in Paris by just four one-hundredths of a second.
Representing Arlington, Virginia, Huske powered through the 100m butterfly final on the second day of the Olympics, finishing with a time of 55.39.
"I feel like I'm in shock right now," Huske remarked after the exhilarating race.
Her teammate, the dominant University of Virginia swimmer Gretchen Walsh, finished a mere 40 milliseconds behind, clocking in at 55.63 to take the silver medal. This marks Walsh's first individual Olympic medal.
"I'm just happy that we're going to be one-two on the podium today," Walsh said
This marks the first time since 1984 that the USA has held the top two spots in this event, according to NBC Olympics.
The presence of five of the seven fastest female swimmers in history made Team USA's victory even more remarkable. Walsh set an Olympic record in the semifinals on Saturday with a time of 55.38, just one millisecond faster than Huske’s time today. Despite this, Walsh still holds the world record, which she established at the U.S. Olympic trials with a time of 55.18 seconds.
